Bounty Hunter BHJS Junior Metal Detector – Best choice for kids

This model is the perfect one for enthusiastic and adventurous children. However, while being for kids, it’s not so good for anything more serious than finding old coins on the beach. It can detect coin-sized objects that are buried up to 5 inches deep. Also, it will detect larger objects that are up to 3 feet under the surface. The indicator meter displays the signal’s strength. As you move toward the unidentified object, the signal gets better, and the audible warnings get louder than before. As you can see, this unit is easy to use, mostly because it’s designed for children.

The great thing about this particular model is its discrimination control. The concept behind it is pretty simple. If you don’t want to search for certain metals such as iron, you can adjust the discrimination level and eliminate the iron detection. Thanks to this feature, your kid won’t have to bother with worthless pieces of metal. It’s a greatly appreciated feature, especially when the product is affordable.

The design is neat and satisfactory. The most important thing about it is the weight. Because it’s designed for children – it is lightweight, compact, and ergonomic. Also, the length of this model can be adjusted so that the user can fine-tune it by their personal preferences. This model has a low battery indicator, which might seem irrelevant, but it’s quite important. Most children don’t care about the batteries, so it’s quite hard to determine the current level of remaining battery power. However, you can prepare another pair of batteries on time thanks to the low battery indicator.

The Bounty Hunter BHJS can detect the presence of all metals including gold, steel, silver, iron, and more. The power sensitivity control is located on the casing, and it maximizes the depth of detection with a simple twist. It’s a straightforward model, with user-friendly controls.

The depth is adjustable as well. You can set the values to 2, 4, 6, and 8 inches, depending on the material you’re trying to detect.

There is also a custom mode in which you have the option to set whichever metal or material you want to find. As you can see, it’s a customizable unit for an affordable price.

Fisher F4 Metal Detector Package – Easy to Assemble and Use

One of the great things about this detector is its ease of use. Although many other detectors are also user-friendly, this particular one includes an 11-segment target identification meter. It also has four different audible signals for various notifications.

As you can see, it is a kit rather than a single unit. You’ll get everything that’s necessary for a treasure-hunting adventure. The display on this particular model is one of the easiest to use and read. The digits could have been a bit bigger, but you’ll get used to it within an hour or two.

The discrimination buttons allow you to fine-tune the piercing levels. In simpler words, if you don’t want to detect a particular material such as iron, all you have to do is set the discrimination levels correctly. If you aren’t sure about the values, feel free to check out the user manual. There is also a custom mode which allows you to select exactly the things (or elements) you want to search for.

Sensitivity is pretty important, especially if you’re a novice. Many people make a common mistake and set the sensitivity values to the maximum. However, it’s not about the sheer piercing power. In fact, it’s a delicate setting which needs to be handled and set up properly or else you won’t get any satisfactory results.

The main trump of this model is its portability. Because it’s so easy to assemble and use, you can put it in a backpack and carry it wherever you go. Once you feel like treasure hunting, you won’t need more than two minutes to get ready. Also, a big part of this particular model is its affordable price. While many others have a pretty hefty price, this one has a high quality-to-price ratio. It isn’t cheap per se, but it’s worth every penny.

Bounty Hunter TK4 Tracker IV – Good Value for Money

If you’re a devoted hobbyist, the Bounty Hunter TK4 might be the thing you’re looking for. While it’s a great tool for DIY enthusiasts, it’s suitable for children as well. Its precise signal can detect smaller metal objects that are buried up to eight inches deep. However, larger objects can be identified much deeper.

It’s safe to say that it’s a professional quality detector with an entry-level price. One of the critical things about this particular model is its versatility. In simpler words, you can use it anywhere thanks to its waterproof casing. Being waterproof makes it perfect for beaches, humid areas, or even treasure hunting during a rainy day.

It weighs around four pounds, and it has a resting part for your elbows to alleviate the hassle and minimize the fatigue. Its adjustable length is great for people who have troubles with their back. Some other models can’t be adjusted, and it significantly narrows down their capabilities.

Audible signals are a pretty important part of this particular unit. It also comes with a 1/4-inch headphone jack which is great if you want to keep your hunt discreet. However, if you don’t feel like wearing headphones, the built-in speaker will do the job.

One of the main advantages of this unit besides its good price-to-quality ratio is the country of origin. As you might know, cheap copies from the Asian market tend to break pretty quickly. The ones that don’t break immediately usually offer false and inaccurate data. However, the Bounty Hunter TK4 is made in the United States, and it comes with a 5-year limited warranty. The company is well-known for their quality of production, and this unit isn’t any different. It’s well-built, and it’s made to last. As long as you maintain it well, it should last for years.

The design is modern, ergonomic, and innovative. It’s safe to say that this is a great all-around metal detector that can fulfill most of your needs and demands.

The discrimination controls allow you to fine-tune the device to your personal preferences. Furthermore, you can customize the sensitivity which helps you to eliminate the unwanted metals from the equation. A metal detector is a great device, but it’s pretty worthless without good discrimination sensitivity.

As far as the design goes, it’s satisfactory. It could have been designed better, but the current design is enough for most challenges.

The critical thing in any detector is its comfortability and ease of use. It’s not worth much if you get cramps or feel numbness after an hour of using your new gadget, especially if you have back problems. However, this particular unit has a universal shape which alleviates the pressure on your back and muscles in general.

One of the main advantages of Bounty Hunter Gold Digger is the headphones. One might consider this advantage pretty irrelevant; however, it’s quite important. First of all, it helps you to remain discreet. Some people find the audible signals annoying and don’t appreciate others treasure hunting on the beach while they are resting. All you have to do to eliminate the issue is hook up the earphone which is included with the unit. Also, if you’re hunting for precious materials such as gold or silver, it’s advised that you wear headphones.

The Bounty Hunter Gold Digger is a great entry-level unit for an affordable price. It may not be the best one on the market, but it packs more than enough usefulness for any DIY enthusiast.

Garrett AT Pro – All Terrain Land and Waterproof Metal Detector

Professionals love the Garrett AT Pro and its additional features. Despite being a great detector, it’s also a unit with some of the best options on the market at the moment. The level of precision in this particular model is at an envious level. In fact, its high-res iron discrimination is considered to be one of the best currently.

One of the most notable things about the Garrett AT Pro is the battery life. While other models require frequent battery changing, this unit can last for days while using the same pair of batteries. It’s estimated that it can last for at least five days with 8+ hours of operation on a daily basis.

If you ever watched the show called “Diggers” you probably saw their equipment. If you watch closely, you can see that all of them use this model in the show. That fact is more than enough proof of its quality and usefulness.

The thing that separates this model from the others is its ability to scan every terrain regardless of the conditions around. You can even use it on the beach because it’s waterproof. This unit is incredibly durable. People drag it in the water, use it while it’s raining, and it doesn’t show any signs of wear.

The ability to change frequencies is another great thing about this unit, and that’s the factor that makes it suitable for devoted professionals. It also comes with headphones and volume control. It may sound pointless, but many other models don’t have the volume control on the headphones, and it gets pretty annoying after a while.

The only thing that could bother you is the first time setup. If you don’t have any previous experience, you might find it hard to fine-tune the settings for the first time. However, if you take a moment and read the user manual, there shouldn’t be any issues with the first assembly.

Fisher F75 Metal Detector – Product of Our Choice

This model is one of the lightest on the market with only around four pounds of weight. However, it’s not the lack of weight what makes it special; it’s the design. The Fisher F75 has an ergonomic and modern design with a cushioned handgrip. The double-filter discrimination mode helps you to eliminate unwanted materials and search in areas with a lot of accumulated trash. In simpler words, it emits a signal with enough power to pierce through a thick layer of trash.

The display has a backlight which is a great addition to an already versatile unit. The benefits are pretty obvious – you can work both by day and night. The contrast is great, and it doesn’t get weaker from unusual angles. The interface isn’t as complicated as one might expect from this professional model. Although it’s not a simple thing for the beginners, the professionals won’t have a single issue with setting up the right modes.

The sensitivity levels are satisfactory, although, they could have been better. Some other models have a greater sensitivity for less money. However, every other additional feature makes up for the lack of sensitivity and justifies the price. As far as the price goes, it’s completely fair. It isn’t a cheap piece of equipment, but it’s worth the effort. If you want to add some equipment to your new device, you can buy headphones and a carrying bag for it. The bag is arbitrary, but the headphones are advised.

Audible signals are quite good. You can customize them to an extent, and set up the device to your preferences. The Fisher F75 has the latest technology integrated, and it performs excellently. Whether you’re a professional or a beginner, you’ll find this particular model interesting and worth checking out.

Fisher F44 Metal Detector – Detects Coins, Jewelry, and Relics

If you’re looking to detect coins, relics, jewelry, and precious metals, the Fisher F44 might be the thing you’re searching for. It’s a quality model with a neat set of useful features. What makes it different from the others is the 10-level sensitivity scale. While other models have around seven or eight levels, this one comes with ten!

Because of the variety of levels, this model can penetrate up to 10 inches in the ground. As far as the design goes, it’s ergonomic and modern. The unit is also waterproof which makes it perfect for treasure hunting on the beach or under rainy conditions. The cushioned handle is a neat touch, and it alleviates the use by lowering fatigue.

The price is more than reasonable considering the quality of this unit. While it’s not cheap per se, its usefulness justifies the somewhat premium price. In simpler words, although it may have a hefty price, it’s worth every penny.

The operating frequency is 7.68 kHz which is 1 kHz higher than any other model from our list. However, the most impressive fact about it is its weight. It weighs only around 2.3 pounds which make it one of the lightest units around.

The size of the search coil is 11 inches, which offers a great scanning radius. If you take a look at the other models, most of them are not exceeding the 9-inch mark when it comes to coil size. The armrest, as well as pole length, is adjustable.

The display is comprehensive, big, and legible. The only thing you might not like is the battery life. The Fisher F44 is notorious for spending a lot of power. It can operate for about 15 to 20 hours before running out of batteries. However, it’s a solvable issue. All you have to do is have another pair of batteries ready at all times.

Things to Consider When Choosing the Best Metal Detector

Although treasure hunting sounds like a lot of fun, it can also be a profitable hobby. Many people have found valuable historical artifacts, and some of them even made millions of dollars. While it sounds quite alluring as a hobby, a successful operation requires top-notch tools. Metal detector pinpointer is a useful device because it saves a lot of time and effort.

If you’re a beginner, you probably have little to no idea about what to look for when choosing a suitable detector for yourself. There are quite a few parameters that need to be determined and analyzed before you opt for a particular model.

We have made a list of the most important things to consider when buying a metal detector. If you follow these steps, you have a better chance of finding a trustworthy, useful, and cost-efficient unit.

The Budget

The first thing you need to think about is your budget. It all starts with your financial capabilities. Once you decide how much money you’re ready to spend, the next few steps are much easier to carry into effect. However, the price of a model doesn’t necessarily define its quality. A lot of people make a common mistake of overpaying a particular model just because it has a hefty price.

Consequently, people get upset when they realize that they have overpaid a unit which doesn’t meet their expectations or has more features than they will ever need. The secret lies in determining the budget and sticking with your decision. Set the upper limit and try not to step over, no matter what happens.

metal detecting

Once you determine your financial limits, it’s time to think about this feature. Discrimination is the ability of a metal detector to distinguish different materials that are buried in the ground. In simpler words, the discrimination feature tells you whether you’ve found a pile of gold or trash. The biggest benefit of it is – saving time and effort.

Use of metal detector

If you’re planning to use your new gadget on the beach, aim for waterproof models. Also, if you are up for treasure hunting while it’s raining, waterproof models are your safest bet. Many models have “specific” features which can be used in various terrains. Pay special attention to this step as it is one of the most important ones.

Sensitivity is defined as the ability of a detector to search metal objects from a certain distance. The simplest analogy is – a volume control on a speaker. Setting the optimal level of sensitivity isn’t easy, but most manufacturers include a short tutorial in the user manual.

Why is a Metal Detector Useful?

There are a few potential answers to this question, but one of them is accepted in a general sense – valuables.

When you find something that was buried a long time ago, the adrenaline starts pumping, and most people see the dollar sign in front of their eyes. Some of the most devoted professionals managed to make a fortune out of the metal detecting business. As you can see, the first reason why people go treasure hunting is – money.

However, due to its thrilling nature, hunting for treasure is widely spread among hobbyists as well. The main difference between DIY hunters and professionals is the fact that most hobbyists don’t look for profit or financial value, but rather the excitement and adrenaline. It’s safe to say that the second reason why people decide to go treasure hunting is – the thrill that comes with it.

After answering this question, the situation is a bit clearer. Professionals use it to find valuable items which could cost thousands of dollars, while amateurs love the excitement and adrenaline, and vice-versa.

Practical value is also an important element. For example, if you have children and you’re planning to build a playground in your yard, the first thing you should do is scan the ground for sharp metal objects. It’s almost guaranteed that you’re going to find a bunch of rusty nails, sheet metal particles, and so on. As you can see, a detector can be used as a safety tool as well.

Contrary to popular belief, very few people go treasure hunting solely because of the financial gain. Many of them appreciate the thrill and excitement far more than the potential monetary benefit. Apart from being a dynamic hobby, it’s also a pretty affordable one.

How Do Metal Detectors Work

Although the concept seems quite complicated, it’s relatively simple. If you want to be a devoted treasure hunter, you need to comprehend the basic principles of these units.

Basic parts of a detector

Stabilizer – keeps the unit steady while you’re sweeping back and forth. This part is optional.
Control box – the “brains” of the unit. The box contains circuits, speakers, controls, batteries, and all the necessary electronics.
Shaft – adjustable part which connects the coil and control box.
Search coil  – also known as “search head.” It’s one of the most important parts of a detector. It’s the part that “senses” the buried metal.
Display and headphones – are optional. However, even though you can hunt without these elements, they are highly advised. They alleviate the hassle by a lot.

What makes a metal detector buzz?

To comprehend the way a detector works, you need basic knowledge about electromagnetism. Whenever you find a magnetic field, there is a high probability you’ll find electricity near. The same rule applies if you stumble upon electricity first. It means that there is a magnetic field around.

A battery that’s located in the top of the detector activates the transmitter circuit. The signal passes electricity through a cable to the coil. Once the electricity starts flowing through the transmitter coil, it creates a magnetic field.

When you hover with an active magnetic field above a metal object, it pierces through by making an electric current flow inside the object. Now the electric current creates a new magnetic field around the buried item. It then cuts through a receiver coil and sends the signal back to the “brains” of a detector creating an audible signal.

underwater metal detecting

How deep will it go?

The piercing capabilities depend on a few factors, and there’s no exact answer to this question. However, if you check out the required factors, you might get a general idea about the piercing power of a particular model.

First of all, bigger things are much easier to detect than small ones. Therefore, the size, shape, and type of the buried item play a critical role. If you’re searching for coins, pins, needles, and other miniature stuff, the piercing depth is quite important.

The position of a buried object is crucial. Items that are buried flat are always easier to find than the ones placed vertically. The reason is pretty simple – flat objects cover a bigger surface; therefore, it’s easy to spot them. The age of the item is yet another important element. Old artifacts tend to corrode after a certain number of years. Oxidized and corroded stuff is hard to find due to minerals interfering with the electromagnetic signals.

Overall, most conventional metal detectors work at a maximum depth of around 8-20 inches, depending on the soil conditions and quality of that model. The more you know, the better results you’ll accomplish. Remember to change the batteries when needed, because a good power source is the most important element for successful treasure hunting.

Different Types of Metal Detectors

There are three most common types of detectors to choose from. Before you opt for a particular one, try comprehending the capabilities of each type to get the idea of which one is the most suitable for you.

Very low-frequency detectors (VLF)

Thanks to the high-end technology, these units are the most frequently used ones. They feature two coils known as the receiver and transmitter. The transmitter emits a low-frequency signal onto the ground surface. The receiver gets the signal and notifies you with an audible beep if there is anything of value under the surface.

Additionally, this type can include an electric circuit (tuner) which filters the signals and “chooses” genuine electromagnetic waves. This option is especially useful if you’re planning to hunt for precious metals. A tuner can help you eliminate the unwanted metals and focus on the ones you’ve chosen to search for.

Pulse induction detectors (PI)

Pulse detectors are mainly used for scanning the objects that are buried deep. They have only one coil which sends a powerful signal to the receiver when it detects a buried object. The bigger models are used in the military for securing checkpoints and identifying any potential threats such as mines, hidden explosives, and more. Although they can be used by beginners, the hefty price is one of the reasons why these units didn’t find their way into one’s home.

This type can also change and switch the current mode depending on the level of discrimination. In simpler words, the PI type is considered as the most accurate one. However, due to its high precision and additional features, it’s also the most expensive type on the market.

Beat Frequency Oscillation Detectors (BFO)

This type is the best for absolute beginners. It’s also considered as the most inexpensive one. The simple design and ease of use are the two important trademarks of every BFO detector. The BFO models have two separate wire coils which are used for detection. An integrated oscillator emits a continuous signal at a certain frequency. The transmitted signal then gets excluded by one of the two coils.

The second coil has the responsibility to detect various interferences in the frequency which defines the type of metal. It sounds like a complicated and complex unit, but it works on a pretty simple concept. The user will get notified with an audible signal immediately after hitting the buried object with electromagnetic waves.

If you’re an adventurist, a conventional metal detector can change your life. Many people started with entry-level ones and gravitated toward the more accurate models as soon as they realized it’s a fun and productive hobby. As we said, it can also be a business if you’re persistent enough. Speaking of persistence, it’s one of the essential elements for successful hunting. Consistency should also be high on the list of your priorities if you want to see any result.

If you’re looking for the most expensive model, you’re not doing it right. Instead of looking at the price, try searching for features which suit your personal preferences. The price of a model doesn’t determine its quality or usefulness!

Check out our reviews, and if you see an interesting model, don’t hesitate to check it out. We have covered only the best ones on the market currently. It’s up to you to decide which one is ideal for your plans.
